EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team scored five runs in the first inning Saturday (April 16) en route to an 8-2 victory over Michigan State at McLane Stadium.
The teams will conclude their series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
As it did in Friday night's 18-6 win, Michigan started hot on Saturday. In the opening inning, the Wolverines scored five times, keyed by two-run doubles from Tito Flores and Jack Van Remortel, and forced MSU starter Nick Powers into a 42-pitch inning.
Matt Frey laced an RBI double down the line in right field in the third inning, and Van Remortel had his second double, a liner to left in the fifth inning, to give Michigan a 7-0 lead.
Michigan starter Cameron Weston (3-2) held MSU hitless through 5.2 innings before the Spartans got going. He issued a walk and an infield single before Jack Frank dropped a two-run double on a soft liner right on the left-field line. Weston regrouped by striking out cleanup hitter Zach Iverson for the second time in the game to get into the dugout.
Weston was masterful, tying his season high with nine strikeouts and scattering just the two hits in 7.0 innings of work to earn the win.
Jacob Denner relieved Weston and ran into a bit of trouble in the eighth as MSU loaded the bases with two outs before the fiery lefty got out of the jam with a swinging strikeout. He cruised through the ninth inning to finish off the win.
Frey added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when he dropped his third double of the day to left-center.
Jimmy Obertop and Frey led all players with three hits, with Frey logging three doubles and four RBI and Obertop being robbed of his fourth hit on a spectacular defensive play in the ninth by MSU. Clark Elliott and Van Remortel had two hits each, with both of Van Remortel's going for extra bases.
