
U-M Falls in Final Home Contest against No. 4 Maryland

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team fell, 13-8, in its final contest of the regular season against No. 4 Maryland Saturday afternoon (April 30) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
The Wolverines (10-6, 2-4 B1G) outshot the Terrapins (15-1, 6-0 B1G), 24-21, with fifth-year senior Caitlin Muir leading the offense with four assists and one goal for five total points. Senior Kaitlyn Mead scored two goals for Michigan, while seniors Claire Galvin, Kelly Poole and Kaley Thompson all netted goals in their final home game at U-M.
Mead led the Wolverines on the draw with eight wins, while Annabelle Burke had three and Josie Gooch had two.
Defensively, Maddie Burns and Morgan Whitaker each had two caused turnovers and Whitaker picked up two ground balls. Graduate senior Arielle Weissman had six saves and also added two ground balls to her tally.
Muir was the first to score for Michigan to tie the game at 1-1 in the 11th minute of the game, but UMD would go on a five-goal run and take a 6-1 advantage with 10:20 remaining in the second quarter of action.
Muir set up the offense for the second time in the game when she found a cutting Galvin, who ripped a one-time shot into the back of the cage to bring Michigan within four. The Wolverines added one final goal in the first half of action as Mead netted a goal on a free position opportunity with U-M heading into the locker room trailing 7-3.
Both Michigan and Maryland scored a pair of goals to start the third quarter before the Terrapins went on a 3-1 run to end the quarter leading 12-6.
With 6:28 left in the fourth quarter, Michigan rushed down the field for a quick clear before Muir found a striking Mead for a goal to bring U-M within five. However, less than one minute later Maryland netted a goal of its own. The Wolverines continued to try to fight back as Poole ripped a shot into the bottom half of the cage, but Michigan was unable to score again in the closing two minutes.
U-M did not qualify for the Big Ten Tournament and will wait to find out if it will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament during the selection show on Sunday, May 8 with the show airing on ESPNU at 9 p.m.
