ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan outfielder Clark Elliott was selected during the opening night of the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft on Sunday (July 17). Elliott was selected in the Competitive Balance round B between the second and third rounds of the draft by the Oakland Athletics at selection No. 69 overall.
Competitive Balance Draft picks were implemented in the 2012-16 Collective Bargaining Agreement. The process to assign picks was amended in the 2017-21 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
The 10 lowest-revenue clubs and the clubs from the 10 smallest markets are eligible to receive a Competitive Balance pick (fewer than 20 clubs are in the mix each year, as some clubs qualify under both criteria).
Michigan has now had at least one player chosen in the MLB Draft in each of the last 10 years, with two days of selections still pending. The Wolverines have seen 13 players drafted in the past four years and 27 players drafted in the past six years. Michigan led all schools nationally in 2017 with 11 draft selections.
Elliott ranked among the Big Ten Conference leaders in most offensive categories as he put up big power numbers from the leadoff spot in the Wolverines' batting order en route to selections to the ABCA All-Region First Team and All-Big Ten First Team. The Big Ten Conference Tournament's Most Outstanding Player, Elliott batted .337 in 59 starts 1ith 17 doubles, 16 home runs, three triples, and 69 RBI for an OPS of 1.090. He led Michigan with a .460 on-base-percentage and was second on the team with 19 stolen bases in 23 attempts.
Michigan finished its season with a 34-28 record, advancing to the NCAA Division I Tournament, where it finished as the runner-up in the Louisville Regional.
Michigan has had at least one player selected in the first two rounds in each of the last four drafts, with Elliott joined by Steven Hajjar (Minnesota Twins, second round in 2021), Tommy Henry (Arizona Diamondbacks) and Karl Kauffmann (Colorado Rockies), who were selected in the Competitive Balance round, and Jeff Criswell (Oakland Athletics, second round in 2020).
The 2022 MLB Draft is 20 rounds, plus compensation picks and two competitive balance rounds, down from the 40-round draft of 2019.
