ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan pitcher Cameron Weston and outfielder Joe Stewart were selected on day two of the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft on Monday (July 18). Weston was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the eighth round (227th overall), while the Anaheim Angels selected Stewart in the ninth round (268th).
With one day remaining in the draft, Weston and Stewart join Clark Elliott, who was selected by the Oakland Athletics 69th overall on Sunday night (July 17) in Competitive Balance Round B between the second and third rounds.
Weston, a 2021 All-Big Ten performer, has consistently been rated as one of the best pitching prospects in the conference and caught fire towards the end of the regular season as Michigan mounted an impressive postseason run while winning the conference tournament.
A career starter, circumstances pushed Weston into a closing role towards the end of the season for the Wolverines, and he responded in impressive fashion. After not making a relief appearance in his first two seasons, he appeared vs. Rutgers on May 19, logging a save to start a run that saw the righty log four saves and a win in eight critical appearances, including six postseason games.
An All-Big Ten Tournament performer at relief pitcher, Weston struck out 11 batters in seven scoreless innings en route to an NCAA Tournament win against Oregon in which he allowed just one hit in 2.1 innings.
All told, Weston struck out 92 batters in 81.1 innings while walking just 38.
Stewart, a Portage, Mich., native, had a career year wearing the maize and blue, posting better numbers than in his entire five-year career at Michigan State combined. An All-Big Ten Conference performer at center field and an All-NCAA Louisville Region selection, Stewart led U-M with 94 hits and 23 stolen bases in 24 attempts while compiling a .349 batting average, 13 homers and 56 RBI.
Stewart had 28 multi-hit games and set U-M single-game records against Ohio State (April 23) with two grand slams in the same inning and 11 RBI as part of a three-home run game. Stewart excelled in rivalry games, batting a combined 7-for-17 with eight runs, six RBI, two homers, two doubles and three stolen bases against his former Michigan State team.
Michigan has now had at least one player chosen in the MLB Draft in each of the last 10 years, with one day of selections still pending. The Wolverines have seen 15 players drafted in the past four years and 29 players drafted in the past six years. Michigan led all schools nationally in 2017 with 11 draft selections.
Michigan has had at least one player selected in the first two rounds in each of the last four drafts, with Elliott joined by Steven Hajjar (Minnesota Twins, second round in 2021), Tommy Henry (Arizona Diamondbacks) and Karl Kauffmann (Colorado Rockies), who were selected in the Competitive Balance round, and Jeff Criswell (Oakland Athletics, second round in 2020).
The 2022 MLB Draft consists of 20 rounds, plus compensation picks and two competitive balance rounds, down from the 40-round draft of 2019. Friday's (July 19) finale features round 11-20 and begins Friday (July 19) at 2 p.m.
