PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team took advantage of penalty-corner opportunities, scoring three goals on the attack, en route to a 4-1 win at No. 19 Rutgers on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 25) at the Scarlet Knights' Bauer Track and Field Complex. It was U-M's second ranked win of the season and first in Big Ten Conference play.
The Wolverines earned goals from four different players, scoring less than two minutes into the game before icing it with a pair of goals late in the fourth quarter.
Michigan set the tone with pressure early, and sophomore Abby Tamer opened scoring at the 1:59 mark on the first corner of the contest, tipping in junior Pilar Oliveros' initial shot from the right post. It was Tamer's team-best seventh marker of the season.
Michigan (5-4, 1-2 Big Ten) largely controlled play throughout the first half, save a couple Rutgers corner chances and shot off the post, but did not score again until the early minutes of the second, off another penalty corner at 31:40. U-M pin-balled the ball through the left side, sending it from Oliveros on the arc back to junior inserter Lora Clarke and to the middle for junior Kate McLaughlin, who redirected it into the cage for her second goal of the season.
Clarke scored a goal of her own at the 54:02 mark -- her fourth this fall -- out of a relentless flurry inside the Rutgers circle. Sophomore Alana Richardson pulled the ball off the goalkeeper's pads and shuffled to the left, where Clarke banged it in from the post.
Rutgers (6-4, 2-1 Big Ten) pulled its goalkeeper after the Clarke tally and Michigan immediately took advantage, adding another off a corner attack just 50 seconds later at 54:02. U-M used a 2-on-1 break to draw the corner, and after an initial defensive save on the first shot, sophomore/freshman Claire Taylor banged in the rebound for her first collegiate goal.
The Scarlet Knights spoiled the shutout bid with a goal off a 2-on-1 opportunity in the circle at 56:30.
Michigan outshot the Scarlet Knights 24-8 and outcornered them 9-6. Sophomore/freshman goalkeeper Caylie McMahon made her first collegiate start in the Wolverine cage and earned three saves, including one off a high shot during the third in consecutive Rutgers corners in the fourth quarter, while RU goalie Sophia Howard stopped 11 of 15 Michigan shots on goal.
The Wolverines will return home for their final non-conference game of the 2022 season next Sunday (Oct. 2), hosting Ball State at 1 p.m. at Phyllis Ocker Field. Admission is free, and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
