
Michigan Men Split with Wisconsin, Arizona at Wisconsin Tri-Meet

MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving program wrapped up the second and final day of competition at the Wisconsin Tri-Meet on Saturday (Oct. 21) at Soderholm Family Aquatic Center. U-M picked up its first win of the season by defeating Arizona 239-108 but fell to Wisconsin by a score of 185-168.
The Michigan men swept both relay races and picked up one individual win across eight events.
U-M kicked off the second day of the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay as Jack Wilkening, Brendan Fitzpatrick, Gal Groumi and Bence Szabados logged a time of 1:27.08, finishing ahead of the Wisconsin "A" team by more than a half-second.
The Wolverines completed the sweep of Saturday's relays by registering the top mark in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Szabados, Wilkening, Groumi and Eitan Ben-Shitrit combined to clock a time of 2:55.44.
Wilkening added to his win total by picking up an individual triumph in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 46.99 seconds.
Ben-Shitrit and Groumi each grabbed a spot on the podium in the 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall at 1:47.32 and 1:47.59, respectively.
The Wolverines also secured second and third in the 200-yard butterfly as Tyler Ray and Groumi registered respective marks of 1:46.84 and 1:47.03.
Fitzpatrick picked up his first individual podium result of the meet by securing second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 54.42.
Szabados touched at 44.02 to finish second in the 100 free to go along with his win in the 50 freestyle on Friday (Oct. 20).
U-M will return to the pool on Thursday (Nov. 16) when it travels to Athens, Ga., for the three-day Georgia Invitational.
