
Michigan Sits in Fifth Place After Day One of Georgia Invitational

ATHENS, Ga. -- The No. 25-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the first day of competition at the Georgia Invitational inside Gabrielsen Natatorium, ending Thursday night (Nov. 16) in fifth place with 138 points. Florida leads the pack with 280 points and two days remaining in the meet.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay final, the quartet of Bence Szabados, Jack Wilkening, Tyler Ray and Gal Groumi finished fifth, clocking a 1:17.44.
In the 200-yard individual medley, Groumi and Eitan Ben-Shitrit put on a strong performance. Groumi finished second overall with a time of 1:42.67, while Ben-Shitrit kept close and secured fourth with a mark of 1:43.65. Both times met the NCAA 'B' standard for qualification.
Szabados picked up another top-five finish in the 50 free, earning a 'B' cut time of 19.33 to secure fourth overall.
Wilkening, Brendan Fitzpatrick, Groumi and Szabados closed out the first day in the pool with a time of 3:06.51 in the 400-yard medley relay -- good for fifth overall.
In diving, Cameron Gammage continued his solid season by accumulating 366.20 points in the three-meter dive to finish third overall.
Michigan will return to the Gabrielsen Natatorium pool on Friday (Nov. 17) for the second day of the Georgia Invitational. Preliminaries will start at 9:30 a.m., and the finals will get underway at 5:30 p.m.
