HOUSTON, Texas -- The University of Michigan baseball team was shut out 10-0 by the Louisville Cardinals in seven innings on Sunday (March 5), the final day of the Shriners College Classic at Minute Maid Park.
The Wolverines (4-7) offense started out slow, getting just a Ted Burton two-out first-inning walk before the inning ended. In the bottom of the inning, U-M starter Jacob Denner struck out two and stranded two to keep the game scoreless after one.
The second inning mirrored the first, with a two-out walk -- this time by Jack Van Remortel, -- being stranded at first base and Denner stranding a pair of Louisville runners and tallied another strikeout.
The Cardinals took control of the game in the third inning, with Denner allowing six runs (two) earned in the frame. After a double to left and a single to center field the Cardinals took a 2-0 lead with two outs and runners on the corners. A ball then was hit to Mitch Voit at third base, but he was unable to field it for an error and allowed a run to score and put runners on first and second. On the next pitch, Louisville (10-1) hit a home run to left field scoring three more runs, all unearned, before a groundout ended the inning.
After another run-free inning by the U-M offense, Denner shook off the third inning to complete a three-pitch 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fourth.
Van Remortel picked up the first and only Michigan hit on the day with a one-out single to left in the fifth inning. After two strikeouts to end the inning, he was left at first base, representing the Wolverines' last base runner of the afternoon. Louisville hit a two-run homer to left field to give it an 8-0 lead.
Ahmad Harajli came in to pitch in the sixth inning and gave up a run after a single opened the inning and a double scored the runner. Harajli left the game in the seventh with a runner on first and second for Voit who moved fron third base to pitch. Voit gave up a two-run double on the second pitch he threw to gave Louisville a 10-0 edge and end the game in seven innings.
Denner (0-3) took the loss, throwing five innings and allowing eight runs (four earned) with five strikeouts and one walk.
The Wolverines will look to get back on track when they return to Ann Arbor for their home opener against Oakland on Wednesday (March 8) at 4 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. Admission to the game is free.
