
Wolverines Drop Series Finale Against Spartans

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team lost to Michigan State 14-2 on Sunday (April 23) in the finale of their three-gamer series at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
After taking the first two games of the series, Michigan (21-18, 9-6 Big Ten) struggled in the final game. The Spartans (24-13, 7-5 Big Ten) led from the start and scored in each of the first five innings, while the Wolverines struggled at the plate with five hits on the afternoon.
The Spartans got to starter Chase Allen (4-3) early, touching him for six runs, five earned, in 2.1 innings. Allen gave up a two-run home run in the first to take a 2-0 lead.
MSU continued with nine runs over the next four innings, with three runs each in the third and fourth, to take an 11-1 lead. The Wolverines managed to crack the scoreboard in the fourth inning when Jonathan Kim walked to start thr inning. After a pair of fly outs, Jack Van Remortel doubled to the gap in left-center to to bring home Kim.
Ahmad Harajli took the mound in the sixth inning and held the Spartans scoreless for the first time with a 1-2-3 inning and two strikeouts. Ted Burton hit his second home run of the weekend to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning to bring the core to 11-2, but the Maize and Blue managed only three more hits the rest of the game. MSU scored its final runs on a three-run home run in the top of the seventh after a leadoff double and one-out walk.
Michigan used five relievers in Jacob Denner, Ryan Zimmer, Harajli, Jake Keaser and Brandon Mann. The quintet combined to allow eight runs, seven earned, with six strikeouts -- three from Harajli -- over 6.2 innings of work. Mann tossed a three-up, three-down ninth inning.
U-M will continue its eight-game homestand on Friday (April 28) as the Wolverines start a three-game series against Oklahoma State. First pitch at Ray Fisher Stadium is set for 4 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
