ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Mitch Voit did a little bit of everything for the University of Michigan baseball team on Saturday (May 13), hitting a go-ahead three-run home run in the eighth inning and picking up the win in relief as the Wolverines defeated Northwestern 5-2 at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The win also clinched the series for U-M.
After an RBI single tied the game at 2 followed by a walk in the seventh signaled the end of starter Noah Rennard's day, Voit came on in relief with two out in the frame. He got the first batter he faced to ground into an inning-ending fielder's choice. Voit then pitched a three-up, three-down eighth before he and the Wolverines offense heated up in their turn at bat.
Dylan Stanton singled on the first pitch of the bottom of the eighth and was pinch run for by Jake Marti, who was caught trying to steal second. Two batters later, Tito Flores was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single from Jack Van Remortel. Voit stepped into the batter's box and smashed a three-run home run to left-center field and gave Michigan (25-22, 12-8 Big Ten) a 5-2 lead.
Voit (3-1) faced the minimum three batters in the top of the ninth, striking out the first batter and allowing a single to the second. A Ted Burton leaping catch of a line drive caught the Northwestern runner off guard, and the Wolverines second baseman threw to Van Remortel at first for a game-ending double play. Voit's third win of the season came in 2.1 innings of work with a pair of strikeouts.
Rennard took a no-decision in a solid outing that saw him allow two runs on six hits over 6.2 innings with six strikeouts against a pair of walks.
The Wolverines started the game's scoring in the first inning when Burton took th second pitch he saw and launched it over the wall in right-center to give Michigan a 1-0 lead early.
The Wildcats (8-37, 3-18 Big Ten) tied it up in the top of the second after a leadoff double scored on a sacrifice fly two batters later. Rennard got some defensive help with a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.
U-M retook the lead in the bottom of the third when Joey Velazquez tripled down the right-field line to score Jimmy Obertop (single) from first base, and the Wolverines held a 2-1 advantage.
After the second inning, Rennard was lights out on the mound until the seventh, adding three strikeouts and allowing just two hits over that span.
Michigan suffered a bit of a power outage itself, putting just a pair of runners on after Velazquez's triple -- a Van Remortel walk in the fourth and a Flores double in the sixth. The Wildcats tied the game at 2 in the top of the seventh after a double with one out and a single scored the runner.
Michigan will wrap up its final home series of the season on Sunday (May 14) at 3 p.m. when they host Northwestern on Senior Day at Ray Fisher Stadium. The game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
