ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Graduate student Cody Jefferis hit for the cycle and collected six RBI on Sunday (May 14) as the University of Michigan baseball team picked up its fourth-straight win along with a series sweep in a 15-5 senior day victory over Northwestern at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Jefferis doubled in the third inning, homered in the fourth, and singled in the sixth before legging out a triple in the seventh to complete the cycle. He finished the day with three runs, four hits and six RBI -- all of which led the team -- and became the first U-M player since Jason Christian in 2007 to hit for the cycle.
Northwestern (8-38, 3-18 Big Ten) got on the board first, using three hits and a walk to score two runners in the top of the first inning. The Wildcats added another run in the third inning on a Michigan throwing error.
Michigan (26-22, 13-8 Big Ten) battled its way back in the bottom of the third with a single from Brandon Lawrence and back-to-back doubles from Jefferis and Ted Burton. Burton's double scored both runners and cut Northwestern's lead to just one.
U-M took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a five-run inning and did not look back. Joey Velazquez and Jake Marti singled with one out, before Lawrence sent a two-out RBI single through the left side to score Velazquez and tie the game. On the next pitch, Jefferis hit his first home run as a Wolverine -- 430 feet to right field -- which scored Marti and Lawrence. Burton followed the lead from Jefferis and sent a long ball deep over the left-center field wall, capping off the scoring with his 30th career homer.
Jack Van Remortel extended Michigan's lead to 8-3 with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the fifth. Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth, but Northwestern got two runs back in the top of the seventh with a two-out homer, cutting the U-M advantage to 8-5.
The Wolverines added six more runs in the bottom of the seventh on just three hits. Van Remortel led off the inning with a double to center field before advancing to third on a groundout and scoring on a wild pitch. Three straight walks loaded the bases for Jefferis, who tripled down the right field line for three RBI and his final peice of the cycle. Burton then drew a walk and advanced to second on a single from Jimmy Obertop, which scored Jefferis. Burton took third on a fielder's choice before scoring the final run of the inning on a wild pitch and putting Michigan up, 14-5.
U-M got its final run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a leadoff pinch-hit home run from Trevor Kilinski, the first of his career. Brandon Mann took the mound for the Maize and Blue in the ninth and pitched a scoreless frame to clinch the series sweep for the Wolverines.
Left-handed pitcher Jacob Denner started on the mound for Michigan and earned his second win of the season after 6.2 innings of work with four earned runs and eight strikeouts. John Torroella, Ahmad Harajli and Mann appeared in relief for the Wolverines, combining to allow just two hits and a walk.
Michigan will wrap up its home season against Xavier on Tuesday (May 16) at 4 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The game will stream live on B1G+ and admission is free.
