U-M Falls to Xavier in Final Home Contest of '23 Season

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell to Xavier 14-2 on Tuesday (May 16) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium in the Wolverines' final home contest of the season. Â
Michigan (26-23) trailed 5-2 through six innings, but Xavier rallied for nine runs on seven hits -- including three homers -- in the top of the seventh and took a commanding 14-2 lead. The Wolverines did not manage a baserunner in the seventh or the eighth, but got two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the ninth before a flyout ended the game.
U-M scored first, plating a run in the bottom of the first inning. Cody Jefferis and Ted Burton led off the at-bat with back-to-back singles before Joey Velazquez reached on a fielder's choice that advanced Jefferis to third. A sacrifice fly from Joe Longo allowed Jefferis to score for a 1-0 Michigan lead.
Xavier (33-20) tied things up in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly after two walks led off the inning. The Musketeers took the lead in the third inning, using clutch hitting with two outs to plate two runs on four hits.
Michigan got one back in the bottom of the third after Burton picked up a leadoff single. A hit by pitch and a walk loaded the bases, and Tito Flores sent a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Burton and put the Wolverines within one, 3-2.
The Musketeers extended their lead to 5-2 with a run in both the fourth and the fifth innings. Michigan looked to rally with two runners on base in the fifth and two in scoring position in the sixth, but could not convert.
Xavier's nine-run seventh put the game out of reach for the Wolverines, who were held scoreless from the fourth inning on.
Michigan will wrap up its regular season at this weekend (May 18-20) with a three-game Big Ten Conference series against Ohio State at Bill Davis Stadium. The series opener, slated for 6 p.m. on Thursday (May 18) will be streamed live on B1G+.
