WESTFIELD, Ind. -- With a pair of 70s (-2) from senior Hailey Borja and junior Monet Chun and a career-low 71 (-1) from freshman Sydney Sung, the University of Michigan women's golf team posted an opening 283 (-5) today (Monday, May 8) to position itself third after 18 holes of the NCAA Westfield Regional at the Club at Chatham Hills.
Opening their third straight NCAA regional, the eighth-seeded Wolverines were paired with Tennessee and Oregon State for the first round. Starting off No. 1, the Maize and Blue got off to a strong start as the five-starters tallied 10 birdies to finish the front side at eight-under par. With four Wolverines under par at the turn, Chun and senior Mikaela Schulz paced the Wolverines with three birdies apiece.
After holding the regional lead through 11 holes, the Wolverines found some snags during the middle portion of the backside as they dropped out of the top of the standings. However, a birdie by Chun and an eagle by Sung on the par 5, 17th, helped U-M maintain a third-place spot closing with a 283 (-5) total.
With a team-best five birdies, Chun posted her ninth sub-par round of the season with her opening 70 (-2). Borja used three birdies of her own to post a 70 (-2) of her own -- her 10th sub-par tally of the season. The duo is among the top 10 -- tied for eighth, three shots back of first-day leader, Mississippi State's Julia Lopez Ramirez (67, -5). Chun will be paired with Lopez Ramirez for the second round.
In her first career NCAA postseason event, Sung used a strong start to post a career-low 71 (-1), her first sub-par collegiate round. After making the turn two-under (two birdies, seven pars), she bogeyed No. 12 and doubled No. 13 after hitting it out of bounds after going for the green. Sitting one-over, she used a strong drive on the par 5, 17th hole to sit 163 to the hole. After hitting the green she drained an 18-foot putt to get back under par and finish with a 71 (-1) and tie for 13th.
Schulz used three birdies to erase three bogeys as she rounded out the top four with her even-par 72 (t-24th).
The Wolverines will be paired with first-day leader No. 36 Tulsa, (279, -9) and No. 5 Mississippi State (280, -8) for the second round. The grouping will be the final pairings off the No. 1 tee starting at 9:05 a.m. The top five teams and the low two individuals not on an advancing team will advance to the NCAA Finals, Friday through Wednesday, May 20-25, at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
