WESTFIELD, Ind. -- Despite a pair of 71s (-1) by senior Hailey Borja and junior Monet Chun, the 44th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team closed the second day of the NCAA Westfield Regional on Tuesday (May 9) posting a 294 team total, falling into eighth place (577, +1) at the Club at Chatham Hills.
After posting a 283 (-5) opening tally Monday (May 8), the Wolverines headed to the first tee playing with first-day leader No. 26 Tulsa and No. 5 Mississippi State. U-M got off to another solid start, etching six birdies and an eagle on the front-side scorecard to make the turn at two-under par. Sitting at seven-under, the Maize and Blue maintained a top-five position.
Heading the back nine, the Wolverines recorded five additional birdies, but missed opportunities added up as the Maize and Blue closed with a 294 team total, slipping to the eighth spot with a 577 (+1) 36-hole total. With 18 holes left, the Wolverines sit six shots back from an advancing spot to the NCAA Finals.
For a second straight day, Borja and Chun mirrored each other as they followed their opening 70s (-2) with second-round tallies of 71 (-1). Chun highlighted the day with four birdies and an eagle for her 71 -- her 10th sub-par round of the season. She now has nine birdies during the event. Meanwhile, Borja repeated her three-birdie performance for her team-best 11th sub-par tally of 71. The duo remains among the top 10 as they are tied for ninth at 141 (-3).
After her career-low 71 (-1) in the first round, freshman Sydney Sung followed with a solid two-birdie 75 and is tied for 33rd with a 146 (+3) 36-hole total. Twin sister, Lauren, is tied for 53rd at 152 and senior Mikaela Schulz is tied for 61st (155).
With a 275 (-13) second round tally, No. 5 Mississippi State took a commanding regional lead at -21 (280-275). Capitalizing off its 277 (-11) second-day total, Oregon State moved into second at 563 (-13). No. 17 Vanderbilt (569, -7) is third, while Virginia and Tulsa are tied for the fourth spot at 571 (-5).
The top five teams and the low two individuals not on an advancing team will advance to the NCAA Finals, Friday through Wednesday, May 20-25, at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Chasing that top-five finish, the Wolverines will be paired with No. 20 Iowa State and No. 40 Tennessee for the final round, which begins at 8 a.m. from the 10th tee.
