
Wolverines to Travel to Chicago for Windy City Invitational

The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team (2-0) opens up road competition with a date at the 2024 Windy City Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 13) at 7 p.m. CST at Navy Pier in Chicago, Ill. U-M will compete alongside Big Ten foes No. 3 Illinois and No. 7 Ohio State, as well as No. 14 Greenville and No. 15 Simpson.
Notes
• Michigan opened up the season with a 404.900 team score in a pair of wins over No. 14 Simpson and No. 15 Greenville. The Maize and Blue went on to win five of six team events and five individual events, including the all-around competition, sweeping the medal stand on pommel horse, high bar and parallel bars. Freshman Pierce Wolfgang won the all-around competition as U-M hit 28 of 30 (93 percent).
• Junior David Wolma was named Big Ten Specialist of the Week for his runner-up finish on vault. His 14.70 was good enough for second place as he earned the third Big Ten weekly honor of his career. Freshman Kyle Walchuk won pommel horse with a 14.30 to win CGA Rookie of the Week honors, while senior Crew Bold earned Specialist of the Week with a 14.40 to take the high bar victory.
• The Maize and Blue has won two of the last three editions of the meet, taking team wins in 2022 and 2020.
• At last season's Windy City Invite, U-M earned a runner-up finish by scoring a 396.050. Senior Chris Read (still rings), junior Wolma (vault) and senior Lais Najjar (parallel bars) all won individual titles, while sophomore Landen Blixt took the all-around victory.
• Five Wolverines hail from the state of Illinois in graduate student Paul Juda (Deerfield), Najjar (Oak Brook) as well as Rithik Puri and Akshay Puri (Chicago).
• The Windy City Invitational will serve as the season opener for Ohio State and Illinois, and the second meet of the season for both Greenville and Simpson.
