Wolverines Roll Past Wisconsin to End Homestand

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team got back into the win column, forcing 28 turnovers, grabbing 22 offensive rebounds and scoring 25 second-chance points en route to a 76-52 victory over Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 13) at Crisler Center.
Laila Phelia led the way for the Wolverines offense in the contest, making seven of her nine attempts to notch a team-high 17 points. Cameron Williams recorded her second double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 boards, with Taylor Williams chipping in 13 points off the bench. U-M forced 28 turnovers in the contest, recording 12 steals and scoring 25 points off the Badgers' miscues.
The Maize and Blue started strong defensively, forcing nine turnovers including three steals to hold Wisconsin to 10 points in the first 10 minutes. The Badgers scored first, but Michigan answered with a 7-0 run that featured a triple from Jordan Hobbs, a jumper from Phelia and a layup from Cameron Williams to take the lead for good. On the boards, Michigan muscled its way to five offensive rebounds in the quarter, scoring six second-chance points en route to a 17-10 end of quarter lead.
The defensive showing for the Wolverines continued into the second quarter, as the Badgers made just four of their 12 attempts with another four turnovers. Taylor Williams had a strong performance for the Wolverines in the quarter, making three shots and a pair of free throws to record eight points. U-M went on a 12-4 scoring run to end the second quarter, including six straight points capped by a Taylor Williams bucket to beat the buzzer, taking a 36-21 lead into the locker room.
The teams went back-and-forth over the first several minutes of the third before Michigan called timeout with 7:17 on the clock, holding a 44-30 lead. It was all Michigan out of the timeout as U-M scored eight straight and 10 of the next 12 points for a 54-32 lead at the midway point of the frame. After the media timeout at the 4:45 mark, Michigan's defense held Wisconsin to just three more points in the quarter, taking a 59-36 lead into the fourth.
With the lead firmly in hand, Michigan closed things out strong in the final 10 minutes, swiping the ball five times in the fourth quarter. The Wolverines had just seven turnovers in the contest, with only one coming in the second half.
The Wolverines start a two-game road trip on Wednesday (Jan. 17), journeying to Lincoln to face Nebraska at 7 p.m. CST. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
