COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team swept the individual event titles en route to a 197.400-197.025 victory over No. 9 Ohio State on Sunday (Jan. 21) at the Covelli Center.
The Wolverines (2-3-0, 1-0-0 Big Ten) were led by graduate students Sierra Brooks and Gabby Wilson, who scored matching 39.575s in the all-around. Brooks captured the balance beam and floor exercise titles, while Wilson earned a share of the vault title. Brooks tied a career-best 9.975 on the beam and scored a 9.950 to win her second floor title of the year, while Wilson tied Naomi Morrison with a 9.950 as the pair shared the vault win. Carly Bauman won her second straight uneven bars title with a career-best tying 9.950.
Michigan saw two 9.825s from Morrison and Wilson in the first and third spots before Bauman put up a huge career-best tying 9.950 with a stuck landing to lead the Maize and Blue in the first rotation on uneven bars. However, OSU (1-2-0, 0-1-0 Big Ten) took the lead after the first rotation, 49.325-49.225.
Morrison and Wilson continued to be a dynamic duo in the second rotation, posting back-to-back 9.950s with stuck landings on the vault and Brooks scored a 9.825 as Michigan trailed Ohio State 98.575-98.425 at the halfway point.
Morrison, Brooks and Wilson wrapped up the third rotation with three straight scores of 9.900-or-better as Morrison got it going with a 9.900 and Brooks earned a 9.950 to lead the pack. Wilson anchored with a 9.925 that put Michigan in the lead, 147.900-147.625, with one rotation to go.
Senior Jenna Mulligan continued to be a solid leadoff for the Wolverines on beam as she scored a career-best 9.900 and Reyna Guggino followed it up with a career-best tying 9.875. Brooks closed out the meet and secured the win for U-M with a 9.975 as it earned its first Big Ten win of the season.
The Wolverines continue their road stint Saturday (Jan. 27) when they travel to Lincoln, Neb., for a Big Ten Conference contest against Nebraska. The meet is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. CST and it will be streamed live on B1G+.
