
Wolverines Sweep No. 14 Simpson, No. 15 Greenville to Open 2024 Season

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team opened the 2024 regular season with a team score of 404.900 to top No. 14 Greenville (383.500) and No. 15 Simpson (366.000) on Saturday (Jan. 6) inside Cliff Keen Arena.
U-M (2-0) led decisively following the second rotation, winning four of six team and five of seven individual events, including the all-around. Michigan also swept the top two places in four of six events individually and took all three individual podiums in three of six events. The Maize and Blue rotated in traditional Olympic order, starting on floor exercise.
Numerous Wolverines made their collegiate debuts on the afternoon, with freshmen Kevin Chow, Jake Islam, Akshay Puri, Kyle Walchuk, and Pierce Wolfgang all representing the block M.
How it Happened
Floor Exercise
U-M began the meet with a 65.100 on floor, as senior Crew Bold led the charge with a score of 13.50. Islam and senior Casey Cummings each notched 13.20s as the Wolverines sat in second place after the initial rotation.
Pommel Horse
The Wolverines scored their first clean sweep of the day, finishing with a 66.400 in the event. Walchuk finished at the top with a 14.30, while sophomore Zach Granados and Chow rounded out the top three with scores of 13.80 and 13.45, respectively.
Still Rings
Michigan continued to extend its lead by posting a 68.350 team score on the rings, taking the top two spots on the podium. Senior Javier Alfonso (14.70) and Puri (13.75) led U-M in the event.
Vault
Junior David Wolma was the lone Wolverine on the vault podium, placing second with a score of 14.70. He finished behind Greenville's Logan Watterson, who took home a meet-high score of 14.95 on the apparatus. The Maize and Blue finished the fourth rotation with a team score of 69.000 on vault.
Parallel Bars
The Wolverines swept the parallel bars podium, with senior Evgeny Siminiuc winning the event with a score of 14.35. Bold finished in second with a score of 14.10 and junior Logan McKeown took third with a 13.40. U-M notched a team score of 68.200 on the apparatus heading into the final rotation.
High Bar
U-M ended the meet with a third clean sweep. Bold placed first with a score of 14.40, followed by Wolfgang's 13.85 and Siminiuc's 13.80. The final rotation yielded a team score of 67.850 for the Wolverines, as they comfortably finished out the meet in first place.

Next up, the Maize and Blue travels to the annual Windy City Invitational, hosted by Illinois-Chicago, scheduled for next Saturday (Jan. 13) at 7 p.m. CST. The event will be held at Navy Pier in Chicago.
