
Michigan Leads Notre Dame, Wisconsin after Day One of Tri-Meet

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team posted eight event wins on Friday (Oct. 18) and established a 156-43 lead over Notre Dame and a 133-72 lead over No. 15-ranked Wisconsin on day one of the teams' two-day tri-meet at Canham Natatorium.
U-M got off to a strong start as the quartet of Stephanie Balduccini, Casey Chung, Natalie Kan and Letitia Sim won the 400-yard medley relay with a dominant time of 3:34.24, more than two seconds faster than the top Wisconsin relay team.
Freshman Marian Ploger finished second in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:56.62 while fellow first-year Wolverine Rebecca Diaconescu took third with a mark of 9:59.22.
Malia Amuan was the top swimmer for the Maize and Blue in the 200-yard backstroke, taking third with a time of 1:59.82.
Michigan dominated the 50-yard freestyle, taking the top four spots paced by Lindsay Flynn, who clocked a time of 22.35 seconds to beat out fellow All-American Balduccini who finished second with a time of 22.64. Brady Kendall and Claire Newman secured third and fourth, touching the wall at 22.79 and 22.87, respectively.
Sim cruised in the 200-yard breaststroke, winning by more than two seconds with a time of 2:12.37. Devon Kitchel secured third overall with a mark of 2:14.96.
Natalie Kan maintained the momentum with a first-place result in the 100-yard butterfly with a mark of 53.36, and Leila Fack took third, clocking a 54.01. Balduccini captured her first individual victory of the evening with a time of 1:46.89 in the 200 free.
U-M finished the first day of competition with a win in the 200 freestyle relay as the team of Balduccini, Flynn, Kendall and Newman combined to clock a 1:28.64.
The Wolverines will wrap up the two-day tri-meet on Saturday (Oct. 19) at 10 a.m. inside Canham Natatorium.
