ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team will travel to Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, to close out the fall slate Monday through Wednesday (Oct. 28-30) for Stanford's Nanea Invitational at the Nanea Golf Club. The three-day, 54-hole event features an 11-team field with all three rounds set to begin with 7:30 a.m. HT (1:30 p.m. ET) shotgun starts.
Notes
• The Nanea Invitational will be made up of 11 teams, including: Arizona State, BYU, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Michigan, Oregon State, San Jose State, Stanford, Texas and Washington.
• U-M will travel five starters to Hawaii. Junior Sydney Sung and redshirt sophomore Mara Janess head up Michigan's starting lineup, while junior Lauren Sung and freshmen Suzie Tran and Jenna Shilts round out U-M's five.
• Michigan has placed at least two Wolverines among the top 20 in all three events this season. In the season opener at the Boilermaker, freshmen duo Tran (15th) and Mimi Guo (t-16th) paced the Wolverines in their collegiate debuts. In the next two events, Janess and Sydney Sung paced U-M at the Mary Fossum with top-10 finishes (t-7th and t-9th, respectively) and then top 20 finishes at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational (t-15th and t-19th, respectively).
• Sydney Sung has shined in her last two events posting back-to-back career-best 54-hole totals and two straight top-20 finishes, including a career-best tie for ninth at the Mary Fossum Invitational. After her career-best 218 total at the Mary Fossum, she followed with a 217 at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational. She is averaging a career-best pace 75.00 per round.
• In three events, Janess leads the Wolverines with a 73.67 per round average -- which is so far a career best by over 2.5 strokes (76.26). She has posted back-to-back career-low 54-hole tallies of 216 at the Mary Fossum and Ruth's Chris Tar Heel. She added a career-low 70 in the first round of the Tar Heel.
• Newcomer Tran is second on the Wolverines with a 74.78 scoring average. She is one of three to have started all three events, including leading the Maize and Blue in her career debut at the Boilermaker Classic (t-15th). Her consistency has been her key as she has tallies of 224, 224 and 225 in her three 54-hole events.
• On the professional front, recent graduates Monet Chun and Hailey Borja advanced to the October LPGA Q School qualifying round. The duo is competing for not only a spot with the Epson Tour -- but also to advance to the last stage at the Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla. (Bobcat and Panther courses). After Ashley Lau's runner-up finish at the Epson Tour Championship at Indian Wells (269, -15), she headed to her native country of Malaysia for the LPGA Maybank Championship.
