Michigan Returns to Win Column With Sweep of Maryland

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball team swept Maryland 25-21, 25-17, 25-21 on Thursday night (Nov. 21) at Cliff Keen Arena.
Michigan (17-11, 7-10 Big Ten) was led offensively by Valentina Vaulet and Amalia Simmons, both of whom tallied double-digit kills on the night. Vaulet also added nine digs, two blocks and three aces. Morgan Burke had 32 assists while Maddi Cuchran had double-digit digs with 12. Jacque Boney also had a strong match with nine kills on a .444 hitting percentage and six blocks.
Maryland (13-15, 4-13 Big Ten) took the first point of the set, but the teams split the first eight before a Michigan run. Led by Trixie McMillin at the service line, the Wolverines scored five straight to take a 9-4 lead with an ace from McMillin and a block assist from Kendyl Reaugh and Boney. Maryland hung around and managed to tie the score at 11 before taking a 13-12 lead. The Terps took their biggest lead of the first set at 18-15, but Michigan responded. A Vaulet kill put the ball in her hands at the service line and she tallied an ace to bring the score within one. A kill from Boney tied the match at 18 and a kill from Simmons put Michigan in front, a lead they never relinquished. Michigan took five of the final eight points with a Terrapin attack error giving Michigan a 25-21 set win.
Michigan got out to a 2-0 lead in the second set with two Maryland attack errors, but the Terrapins regrouped and took the next six points to take a 6-2 lead and force an early U-M timeout. Two kills from Simmons out of the timeout brought the score to 6-4, but Maryland stayed in front until a kill from Vaulet tied the set at 11. A block assist from Nyambio and Vaulet put Michigan in the lead and the Wolverines hung on for the rest of the set. Maryland brought the match to within one at 15-14, but kills from Vaulet and Simmons forced a Maryland timeout. Out of the timeout, Vaulet tallied her second ace of the match and helped U-M take eight of the final 11 points to win the second set 25-17. Reaugh had four kills in the final eight points and Chopra added two aces.
The Wolverines started the third set taking a 6-1 lead with three kills from Simmons and Vaulet's third ace of the match. A block assist from Reaugh and Boney put Michigan up 8-3, but Maryland came back and tied the match at nine before taking a 12-10 lead. Michigan responded and took the next four points with two kills from Simmons and one each from Boney and Vaulet. The Terps tied the match at 16, but an 8-1 Maize and Blue run put U-M at match point. Vaulet tallied three kills on the run while Reaugh added two and a block assist. Maryland tried to mount a comeback and took the next four points, but Reaugh finished off the match with a kill to give Michigan a 25-21 set three win and the sweep.
The Wolverines will host No. 13-ranked Oregon on Saturday (Nov. 23) at 7 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. The match will be streamed live on B1G+.
