WACO, Texas -- Julia Fliegner of the University of Michigan women's tennis team continued her run at the NCAA Singles Championship, knocking off Virginia Tech's Ozlem Uslu in straight sets on Thursday afternoon (Nov. 21) at the Hurd Tennis Center. With the win, Fliegner is the fourth Wolverine to make the quarterfinals of the NCAA Singles Championship.
Fliegner won the first three games of the first set, taking early control of the match. She dropped just two games in the opening set for the early match lead.
In the second set, Fliegner went up a break at 4-2 but Uslu answered by winning two straight games to bring the set back on serve at 4-4. Fliegner dropped just one point in her next service game, taking the 5-4 lead. With Uslu back to serve to stay in the match, Fliegner fought off one game point to get the game to the deuce point. Fliegner ripped a forehand on Uslu's second serve, forcing a return into the net to seal the win.
Fliegner joins 2017 national champion Brienne Minor, Kate Fahey and Kari Miller as Wolverines to make a run to the NCAA Singles Championship quarterfinals.
