
Sutherland, Laurencin Win Gold; U-M Finishes Fifth at B1G Indoor Championships

GENEVA, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team concluded the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Saturday (Feb. 24), with first-place finishes from Savannah Sutherland and Aasia Laurencin highlighting the weekend.
U-M finished in fifth place with 71 points, just one point behind fourth-place Minnesota. Illinois finished first with 104 points, while Penn State (87) and Iowa (73) rounded out the top three.
Sutherland won the team's first gold medal of the day, finishing the 400-meter dash in 51.67 seconds. The junior finished just 0.05 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Kenisha Phillips of Indiana. Sidney Green had an impressive weekend in her Big Ten Indoor Championships debut, finishing seventh in the event with a personal-best time of 53.82. The time is the fifth-best in program history.
Laurencin posted a personal-best time of 8.01 in the 60-meter hurdles on the way to her own first-place finish, crossing the line just 0.005 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Paige Magee of Iowa.
In the 800-meter run, Penelopea Gordon finished in second place (2:05.34) while Cassie Kearney finished in fourth in a personal-best 2:06.16. The pair scored 13 total points for U-M in the event.
Sam Tran saw two top-eight finishes on the day, finishing sixth in the mile (4:39.77) before earning bronze in the 3,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 9:19.06. Samantha Saenz finished in top eight in the 3,000-meter, finishing sixth with a personal-best time of 9:21.62.
The 4x400-meter relay team scored two points for the Wolverines, with Green, Noelani Phillips, Kearney, and Gordon running 3:42.45, good for seventh place.
A pair of throwers earned top-eight finishes to give Michigan seven total points in the shot put, as Corinne Jemison finished in third place with a school-record mark of 16.82m (55 feet, 2.25 inches) and Maria Deaviz finished in eighth place with a mark of 15.96m (52 feet, 4.5 inches).
Riley Ammenhauser scored three points in the triple jump, finishing in sixth place with a season-best jump of 12.84m (42 feet, 1.5 inches).
Laurencin and Sutherland were named First Team All-Big Ten while Samantha Hastie, Gordon, Green, and Tran were named Second Team All-Big Ten.
The Maize and Blue will close out the indoor season at the NCAA Championships on Friday and Saturday (March 8-9) 9 in Boston, Mass.
