
Michigan Downs UCLA Behind Complete Game from Voit

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- On a rainy spring break night in LA, Mitch Voit pitched a complete game in under 100 pitches to lead the University of Michigan baseball team over UCLA , 4-3, on Friday night (March 1) at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Voit who allowed just three runs on four hits over nine innings of work and finished the game with 96 pitches. He added three strikeouts and walked just two. Voit also helped out on offense, going 2-for-5 with a run and RBI.
U-M (4-6) opened the scoring in the first inning but UCLA (5-4) scored two runs in the second to take the lead. The game remained 2-1 until a three-run seventh inning from Michigan allowed the Wolverines to come from behind. The Bruins got one back in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to complete a comeback.
With one out in the first inning, Mack Timbrook doubled to right center for Michigan's first baserunner of the game. After he advanced to third on a passed ball, Voit singled and Timbrook scored on the play. Voit stole second base and Caruso drew a two-out walk, but a pop-up to second base ended the inning. On the mound, Voit opened the game and retired the Bruins in order.
Dylan Stanton led off the second inning with a single but could not score as the next three batters were retired. UCLA started its half of the inning with two base hits and had two runners in scoring position with no outs before a groundout and a sacrifice fly scored both Bruin baserunners.
After the second inning, Voit was dialed in and allowed just one base runner over the next four innings in which he used just 28 pitches. Michigan had chances to score in the fourth inning when Kyle Dernedde doubled with one out as well as the fifth, when Stephen Hrustich reached on an error, but the Wolverines were unable to convert and UCLA led 2-1 heading into the 7th.
Greg Pace Jr. reached to open the seventh inning on a dropped third strike call which started a three-run rally. Pace moved around the bases on a stolen base and a wild pitch and scored on a Timbrook groundout. Voit tripled and scored as Hrustich reached on a throwing error from the Bruin second baseman. Cole Caruso then hit Michigan's second triple of the inning and Hrustich scored from first befor a strikeout ended the inning, leaving two runners on base.
UCLA got two baserunners in the seventh and scored on a single to center field. Voit forced a groundout to second to leave the tying run on base as Michigan led 4-3 through seven complete innings.
Michigan looked to add insurance runs in the top of the ninth and had two men on with just one out after a hit by pitch and error, but a popup to the catcher and strikeout ended the inning.
Voit returned to the mound for the bottom of the ninth and allowed a leadoff double to begin the inning. UCLA could not advance the runner as a strikeout, third base groundout and flyout ended the game and U-M won 4-3 to start the Dodgertown Classic.
The Wolverines continue the Dodgertown Classic on Saturday (March 2) at Anteater Stadium against UC Irvine at 1:00 p.m. PT with the game streaming live on ESPN+.
