SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team led midway through the first quarter, but were unable to hold it, falling 19-9 against defending NCAA Champion No. 2 Notre Dame on Saturday (March 16) at Arlotta Stadium.
Senior Michael Boehm crept closer to the U-M career points record with one goal and a trio of assists on the day. He now has 209 career points, four short of tying the program record, and his 92 assists are two shy of knotting the U-M career mark. Sophomore Bo Lockwood also chipped in a trio of helpers on the afternoon.
Graduate attackman Justin Tiernan led the Wolverines with four goals for his seventh hat trick of the season and he has now scored at least one goal in 18 straight games.
The Fighting Irish (5-1) got on the board first at 10:51 of the opening quarter on a man-up score. U-M (5-3) answered back at 6:34 on a man-up score from junior Ryan Cohen and a marker in close from Tiernan at 5:08 to take a 2-1 advantage. Following two straight Irish goals, Boehm tied it off a Wietfeldt faceoff win and wing feed as the first quarter ended knotted at three.
Notre Dame ripped off seven straight markers to open the second stanza as Michigan was held scoreless for more than 16 minutes of game action. Tiernan's second of the day broke the drought, converting on a feed from Lockwood with 1:50 to play in the first half as the contest sat at 10-4 at the intermission.
