ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team ran its winning streak to six, shutting out Penn State, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon (March 17) at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M won the doubles point and the first three singles matches off court to pick up its second Big Ten win of the season.
Michigan took the doubles point for the early lead, winning matches at No. 3 and No. 2. U-M's No. 3 pair of Reese Miller and Bayley Sheinin shook off an early break, winning three straight games for a 3-1 lead. It was all Michigan from there as the duo took a 6-3 win.
Penn State evened the doubles ledger at one match apiece, taking advantage of a late break at No. 1 for a 6-3 win of its own.
With the doubles point coming down to the match at No. 2, Michigan's Julia Fliegner and Gala Mesochoritou were tied at 5-5. Both teams held serve in their ensuing games, sending the match to a tiebreaker. It was all Maize and Blue in the breaker as the Wolverines raced out to a 6-0 lead and converted on its second match point in a 7-1 victory.Â
Kari Miller pushed Michigan's lead to 2-0, winning a 6-2, 6-0 match at the top spot. She won the first two games of the first set and never looked back, dropping just two total games between the sets.
Mesochoritou quickly followed for Michigan's third point of the afternoon, winning 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3. After falling behind 2-0 in the first set, she ripped off six straight games for the 6-2 win. It was much of the same in the second as she won five straight games for a 5-1 lead en route to the win.
Jaedan Brown provided the clinching point, winning 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 4 spot. She broke on a deuce point at 3-2 in the first set, igniting a run of three straight games for a 5-2 lead. She held on for the 6-4 win as Michigan won five first sets in singles action. It was all Brown in the second set as she dropped just one game to account for Michigan's fourth point.
