
Michigan to Face No. 18 Coastal Carolina in Conway

SCHEDULE UPDATE (3/9/24 9 a.m.): Saturday's game (March 9) between Michigan and Coastal Carolina, originally scheduled for 2 p.m., will now begin at 6 p.m. due to inclement weather expected in the Conway area.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team (5-8) will return to the road to take on No. 18-ranked Coastal Carolina for a three-game series in Conway, S.C. On Friday (March 8), the Wolverines will open the series at 4 p.m. before a 6 p.m. contest on Saturday (March 9) and the series finale on Sunday (March 10 at 1 p.m.). All games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Notes
• The Wolverines won their home opener against Oakland, 13-5, on Wednesday (March 6) after going 2-5 on their spring break trip. Ten different Michigan players tallied hits in the game with Kyle Dernedde leading the team with three. Eight Wolverines scored a run in the game with Mack Timbrook leading the way with three runs.
• After a complete game victory over UCLA, Mitch Voit was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week. In the complete game against the Bruins, Voit gave up just four hits and three runs -- using only 96 pitches and struck out three. With his bat, Voit leads the team over the last ten games with 13 hits and a.342 average. He has six extra-base hits (four doubles, one triple and one home run), five runs and six RBI while slugging .579. Voit is fourth in the conference in doubles on the season with six, while ranking 31st nationally.
• Michigan is second in the nation in double plays with 15 and seventh in double plays per game averaging 1.25 per game. Leading the nation is this weekend's opponent, Coastal Carolina with 16. U-M turned two over the weekend and have converted a double play in nine of its 13 games this season with a high of four against Western Michigan. Kyle Dernedde has been involved in 12 double plays leading the team while Voit and Mack Timbrook have been part of 10.
• Dernedde had a strong offensive week in California and was second on the team with five hits and a .294 average. Against Oakland, Dernedde added three hits and two runs with a triple. Dernedde has started every game this season for the Wolverines at shortstop and is hitting .277, good for third on the team.
• Cole Caruso hit his first home run as a Wolverine in the win over Oakland -- a grand slam to right field. Caruso has started every game for Michigan and is the only player to complete every game. He is hitting .265, good for fourth on the team and leads the team in RBI with 10.
• Bradley Navarro started four out of the five games in California and was the only freshman to start multiple games over the last week. He also earned the start at designated hitter against Oakland and hit his first career home run. He added another run in the game after he reached on a hit by pitch. On the season, Navarro has five hits and an on-base percentage of .448. At Globe Life Field, Navarro made three pinch-hit appearances and had RBI singles in two of the three. Â
• Dylan Vigue earned the third start of his career last weekend and set a new career high with five strikeouts against San Diego. So far on the season, Vigue has pitched 12.1 innings and given up 10 hits, and struck out 10 batters.Â
• Twenty players have had a plate appearance this season with eight freshmen making debuts at the plate. On the mound, U-M has used 17 pitchers with seven of those being freshmen. Only five Wolverines have appeared in every game, four have started every game, and only one has started and completed every game in Caruso.
• Coastal Carolina is ranked 18th in the nation and holds an 11-2 record. The Chanticleers are on a 10-game win streak with a sweep over Liberty last weekend and two mid-week wins over USC Upstate as their most recent wins. In its opening weekend, Coastal Carolina defeated George Mason, 26-0, to open the season before falling to Indiana and Duke. All-time U-M is 4-8 against the Chanticleers but won 10-4 in the most recent meeting in 2015.
