ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell 16-1 to Ohio State on Saturday afternoon (April 20) in the second game of the Wolverines' three-game series against the rival Buckeyes at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (19-21, 9-5 Big Ten) used 27 players, nine of them seeing time on the mound. Starter Will Rogers (0-3) took the loss, going five innings and allowing three runs on four hits over five innings with three strikeouts and a walk. Mitch Voit tallied an RBI double that scored AJ Garcia for U-M's lone run.
Things started well for the Wolverines, with Rogers tossing a 1-2-3 inning that included a pair of punchouts. U-M gave Rogers an early lead in the home half of the inning when Garcia worked a leadoff walk. The next batter, Voit, hit his 17th double of the season to score Garcia from first and give U-M a 1-0 lead.
Rogers held OSU scoreless in the second inning, but got to him in the third, scoring three times thanks to a two-run homer and an RBI triple to take a 3-1 lead.
Rogers again settled in and kept the Buckeyes scoreless over the next two frames before being relieved by Sachem Ramos in the sixth inning. Ohio State scored three runs in the sixth, three in the seventh, four in the eighth and three in the ninth against eight Wolverine relievers to secure the 16-1 victory.
The Wolverines will look to rubber match to try to win the series on Sunday (April 21) when they host Ohio State at Ray Fisher Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
