AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Using a 217 (+1) 54-hole total, University of Michigan women's golf fifth-year senior Hailey Borja tied for eighth at the prestigious Augusta National Women's Amateur on Saturday (April 6), which closed with a final round at the famed Augusta National.
After receiving a special invitation during U-M's spring break training trip in early March, Borja made her second trip to the prestigious women's amateur event, after she tied for 12th in 2022 (221). She also helped the Maize and Blue have a Wolverine compete for the third straight year -- Borja and Ashley Lau in 2022, Monet Chun in 2023 and Borja again this year.
With the top 72 amateurs from around the world invited to the famed amateur event, Borja used three birdies and an opening 71 (-1) at the Champions Retreat Golf Club on Wednesday (April 3) to position herself in a tie for 21st. With the top 30 advancing, Borja returned to the Champions Retreat in the morning wave and carded three more birdies to etch an even-par 72. With her 143 (-1) 36-hole total, it helped her advance for the second time as she was tied for fifth.
After the tradition of allowing the entire field to play a Friday practice round on Augusta National, Borja used it to prepare for her final 18 holes on one of the world's most renowned golf courses. With seven pars and two birdies on the par 5s (Nos. 2 and 8), she headed to the back-nine at two-under.
After a bogey on No. 14 was erased by a third birdie on the 15th, Borja closed her final three holes four-over to post a 74 (+2), matching her prior final-round tally from 2022. With her 217 54-hole total, Borja posted the first top-10 finish for a Wolverine at the event as she tied for eighth.
Borja will rejoin her teammates for the start of the postseason at the Big Ten Championships, Friday through Sunday, April 19-21 at the Bulle Rock Golf Course in Havre de Grace, Md.
