ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Patorn Hanchaikul and Nicholas Steiglehner of the University of Michigan men's tennis team were named to the 2023-24 Academic All-District Team, selected by College Sports Communicators, on Tuesday afternoon (May 14). To receive the honor, student-athletes must have completed at least one year of classes, have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average and have been in 70 percent of the team's matches.
Enrolled in the Ross Business School, Steiglehner posted a 22-12 singles record this season, with a 15-6 dual match record. He was 12-4 at his primary position of No. 6 singles while also going 2-1 at No. 5 and 1-1 at No. 4. He went 6-1 in the Big Ten and is currently on a nine-match win streak, dating back to March 29. He won both of his matches at the Big Ten Tournament Championship as Michigan reached the championship match for the third straight season. A native of New York, N.Y., Steiglehner also won both of his NCAA matches in the first and second rounds as the Wolverines qualified for the 33rd time in program history.
Hanchaikul recorded a 15-8 singles record with a 12-5 dual match record. During the season he recorded a seven-match win streak, which included a win over a ranked opponent that clinched Michigan's ITA Kick Off win to send the Wolverines to the National Indoors. Playing primarily at No. 4 singles, Hanchaikul went 7-4 at No. 4, 3-1 at No. 3 and 2-0 at No. 5 including three matches at the Big Ten Tournament Championship and two in the NCAA Tournament. Hanchaikul went 10-12 in doubles and 8-9 at No. 2 doubles with partner Will Cooksey. The duo played at No. 2 in all five postseason matches.
Michigan posted a 17-13 overall record and was the runner-up in the Big Ten with an 8-1 record and finishing second at the tournament. The Wolverines ranked as high as No. 11 during the season and made their eighth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament under first-year head coach Sean Maymi.
As finalists, the pair will advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America honorees will be announced on June 5.
