ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Five members of the University of Michigan baseball team were named to the College Sports Communicators 2024 Academic All-District Baseball Team, the organization announced Tuesday (June 4).
Senior pitchers Chase Allen and Jacob Denner earned the honor and were joined by graduate students Stephen Hrustich, Mack Timbrook and Kyle Dernedde. Allen and Denner were named to the CSC All-District team last year as well. Denner, Timbrook and Dernedde were also named as finalists for Academic All-America selection. First-, second- and third-team CSC Academic All-America honorees will be announced Tuesday, July 2.
Allen, a sport management graduate, is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar accolades last season. This season, he appeared in 19 games (12 starts) and struck out 33 batters.
Denner earned his bachelor's degree in sport management last month and went 9-5 this season with four saves, a 3.89 earned-run average and 70 strikeouts. Over his career, he pitched in 94 games, complied 269 strikeouts in 288 innings -- all which rank in the top five in program history. He was selected to the All-Big Ten first team this season and is a three time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
Hrustich, a social work graduate, appeared in every game this season and led the team in home runs with 15. Named to the All-Big Ten first team in 2024, he posted a .300 batting average with 64 hits, 51 runs and 46 RBI. Prior to joining Michigan, he earned Academic All-Big Ten honors three times at Northwestern.
Timbrook, working toward a master's in Sport Management, played in 58 games this season and earned All-Big Ten third-team honors. He hit .282 with 16 doubles and 39 runs. Timbrook was a three-time Academic All-MAC selection at Kent State before coming to Michigan this season.
Dernedde, a real estate development graduate, started every game this season at shortstop, batting .251 with 31 runs and 29 RBI and defensively was part of one of the best double-play combos in the nation.
To receive All-District recognition, student-athletes must have completed at least one year of classes at their institution and have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average.
