ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan men's soccer team (5-0-2, 1-0-1 Big Ten) earned a conference point after a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Washington (3-2-3, 0-1-1 Big Ten) on Monday (Sept. 16) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
Jason Bucknor provided the lone score for the Wolverines, his second goal of the season and first since his tally against Oakland on Aug. 25. Bryce Blevins and Beto Soto each notched an assist on the marker. Blevins now boasts four assists while Soto leads the team with five. In goal, Isaiah Goldson registered two saves to help U-M earn a point in the league standings.
The offensive fireworks came early in the first half as Michigan scored first for the seventh straight game. Soto started the action by feeding a through ball to Blevins on the left side of the penalty box. Blevins then lofted a cross in the direction of Bucknor who headed the ball underneath the goalkeeper and into the net for the 1-0 lead in the sixth minute of play. The Huskies responded quickly with a goal of their own in the ninth minute to knot the game at one. Both teams continued to create chances, but the score remained 1-1 heading into halftime.
In the second stanza, the two sides continued to find scoring opportunities, but neither was able to find the crucial deciding goal. Michigan's best chances came courtesy of Joao Paulo Ramos who fired two long-range shots that nearly missed, one of which hit the crossbar and flew over the goal. Michigan out-shot Washington, 5-4, in the second half, but neither team found pay-dirt as the first conference meeting between the two schools ended in a draw.
Next up, the Wolverines will hit the road when they head to the West Coast to take on UCLA on Saturday (Sept. 21) at 3 p.m. PT in Los Angeles.
