Wolverines Sweep Rivals in Singles at Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team closed out play at the Michigan Invitational on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 12) at the Varsity Tennis Center to complete tournament action for the season. U-M swept its singles matches, taking seven from Ohio State and one from Michigan State.
Michigan took a pair of doubles matches from Texas Tech, winning both in a tiebreaker. Emily Sartz-Lunde and Lily Jones grabbed a 7-4 tiebreak win for their match, with Piper Charney and Jessica Bernales winning 7-3. In Michigan's other doubles match, the Wolverines faced each other with Julia Fliegner and Reese Miller emerging victorious.
In singles action, U-M squared off against Ohio State in seven of its eight matches. The lone Wolverine to not face a Buckeye, Emily Sartz-Lunde, came away with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Michigan State's Amara Brahmbhatt.
Michigan took all seven matches from the Buckeyes, with Lily Jones, Piper Charney, and Reese Miller each rebounding from dropping a first set to win in three. Jessica Bernales, Julia Fliegner, and Bayley Sheinin each won in straight sets. Ava Bruno ended the day on a high note for the Wolverines, winning 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 for her third singles win of the weekend.
U-M dropped just one singles match over the three days in its final tuneup before dual matches begin.
Michigan begins dual-match play in two weeks, hosting the ITA Kick-Off at the Varsity Tennis. Joining U-M at the event are Yale, UCSB, and Vanderbilt. The Wolverines will face Yale on Saturday, Jan. 25, at noon.
