COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan football team posted a dominating, all-around 45-20 win over Maryland on Saturday (Nov. 22) evening at SECU Stadium. The victory saw U-M perform efficiently through the air and on the ground, while holding Maryland to just 71 rushing yards on defense.
The Wolverines' offense played a clean and balanced game, totaling 443 yards (215 passing, 228 rushing) with no turnovers or punts in the win. U-M also saw great success on third down, converting on 12-of-14 opportunities.
Quarterback Bryce Underwood completed an efficient 16-of-23 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns, while Andrew Marsh led Wolverine receivers for a second straight week, posting 76 receiving yards and one touchdown across five catches.
Bryson Kuzdzal took control of the U-M backfield this week and became the fourth different Wolverine this season to post a game of 100 rushing yards, finishing with exactly 100 on 20 carries. He also found the end zone three times in the win in the first multi-touchdown game of his career.
Defensively, the Maize and Blue allowed just 71 rushing yards in the contest and held the Terrapins to conversions on only five-of-14 third-down opportunities. Mason Curtis led the team in tackles (six) and intercepted a pass en route to the win.
After Maryland strung together a 10-play, 75-yard, game-opening scoring drive, the Wolverines responded with a touchdown of their own. The Terrapins unsuccessfully attempted an onside kick, which was recovered by the Wolverines at the Maryland 47-yard line. From there, a steady dose of Kuzdzal (five touches for 35 yards) set up a 12-yard diving touchdown reception by Marsh to tie the game.
On its second drive, U-M marked off its own long scoring drive of 12 plays and 83 yards, which included a 25-yard reception by Marsh, a 20-yard catch by Zack Marshall, and a two-yard rushing score by Kuzdzal.
Back in possession, Terrapins' quarterback Malik Washington fired a pass tipped by a receiver and intercepted by Curtis, who returned the ball to the Maryland 23-yard line. This set up a 22-yard receiving touchdown by Donaven McCulley on a screen pass three plays later and extended the U-M lead to 21-7.
Maryland put together a strong drive into Michigan territory on its next opportunity, but the effort was thwarted by a Jaishawn Barham sack in the red zone to force fourth down and a field goal with 5:25 remaining in the second quarter to cut the deficit to 21-10.
The first half of the contest closed with a missed Dominic Zvada 38-yard field goal following a methodical downfield push by the Wolverines and a pair of scoreless drives between the two teams.
In the second half, Michigan's offense continued to produce chunk plays, including a 21-yard reception by Marlin Klein and a 19-yard rushing touchdown by Kuzdzal on the opening drive of the third quarter. Kuzdzal's second touchdown of the quarter, and third of the game, came seven minutes later -- a one-yard score to move the Wolverines ahead 35-13.
In a fourth quarter that saw the Wolverines continue to expand their lead, U-M added two more scores. Jasper Parker found the end zone with a diving effort on a six-yard rush, and Zvada redeemed himself with a 46-yard field goal powered directly through the center of the uprights. The game ended in a 45-20 Michigan victory.
Michigan closes its regular season schedule at Michigan Stadium next Saturday (Nov. 29), hosting top-ranked Ohio State. The game is scheduled for a noon kickoff on Fox.
