Wolverines Play Fast, Pick Up Fourth Straight Win of 20+ Points

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team led for all 40 minutes and by as many as 32 points in an 85-59 win over Akron on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 13) at Crisler Center.
Michigan (9-1) had five players score in double digits for the second time this season. Ashley Sofilkanich and Syla Swords each led the way with 17 points apiece. Solfikanich went 8-for-9 from the field, had six rebounds and a season-high four steals. Swords grabbed six boards with two assists and two steals in a team-high 29 minutes. Olivia Olson turned in 16 points, with Mila Holloway recording 12 points, five rebounds and seven assists. Te'Yala Delfosse finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists in 22 minutes off the bench.
Michigan opened the game on a 10-2 run, forcing an early Akron timeout at the 6:55 mark. Holloway opened up with a baseline jumper, followed by a pair of free throws from Brooke Quarles Daniels and a bucket from Olson before the Zips got on the board. Michigan countered with back-to-back layups from Sofilkanich in transition as Akron called a timeout to stem the tide.
Akron closed within three points, 17-14, in the final two minutes of the first quarter. Another Sofilkanich layup pushed the Michigan lead back to five, with Swords connecting on a triple with 16 seconds remaining as U-M took a 23-15 lead after 10 minutes.
Michigan put up 25 points in the second quarter behind eight from Olson. U-M's lead grew to as many as 20 points in the second when Kendall Dudley hit the first three-pointer of her career at the 1:53 mark, giving the home team a 48-28 lead. Akron scored on its ensuing possession, sending Michigan to halftime with a 48-30 lead.
Quarles Daniels made a fast-break layup early in the third quarter, followed by a Swords layup in transition to quickly push the Michigan lead back over 20 at 52-30. The teams went back-and-forth over the ensuing minutes before the Michigan lead reached 30 for the first time, 67-37, when Holloway found Swords streaking for a layup at the 3:12 mark of the quarter. The Zips scored nine of the final 12 points of the third to give U-M a 70-46 lead after 30 minutes.
Michigan scored six of the first eight points in the final period, increasing its advantage to 76-49 after a Delfosse layup with 6:47 remaining. The U-M lead swelled to 32 twice, the latter on a bucket off the bench from Jessica Fields for an 85-53 margin with 2:20 left on the clock. Akron connected on a pair of triples in the final minutes to provide the final score.
Michigan concludes a four-game homestand next Sunday (Dec. 21), hosting Oakland as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. The women will tip off at noon, and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
