ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After opening the spring with a third-place finish in Puerto Rico, the University of Michigan men's golf team heads right back for its second event -- the Border Olympics, hosted by Houston, on Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 17-18). The two-day, 54-hole event features a 16-team field and will be played at the Laredo Country Club which will be set up for a par 72 and 7,375 yards.
Notes
• The Border Olympics has a field of 16 teams, including Augusta, Houston (host), Houston Christian, Illinois State, Lamar, Lipscomb, Louisiana, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, New Mexico State, Rice, Sam Houston, Troy, ULM, UT Rio Grande Valley and Wright State.
• U-M will travel the same starting five and an individual from the spring opener (Palmas del Mar Collegiate). Senior Hunter Thomson, freshman RJ Arone and senior Yuqi Liu make up the top three, while freshman Dean Muratore and fifth-year senior Ben Hoagland round out the starting five. Freshman Nicolas Simon will play in a second straight event as an individual.
• Michigan is making its fifth straight trip to Houston's Border Olympics. Following back-to-back 12th-place finishes (2021 and '22), U-M used Will Anderson's tie for fifth (215, -1) to finish third in 2023. Last season, the Wolverines were led by Jude Kim's career performance and fourth-place finish (207, -9) to tie for fifth.
• With four Wolverines etching sub-par tallies and top-25 individual finishes, the Wolverines opened their spring using an 853 (-11) team total to garner a third-place finish at the Palmas del Mar Collegiate. Thomson led the Maize and Blue for the sixth time in seven events with his 212 (-4). Muratore gave U-M two in the top 15 as he tied for 11th (213, -1).
• Simon made his collegiate debut at the Palmas del Mar Collegiate. He tied for 44th after posing a 221 (74-73-74).
• Thomson continues to pace the Wolverines with a career-best-pace 70.20 scoring average. He had fired 10 rounds under par with a season-best 66 (-6) in back-to-back rounds in his win at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational. He has led U-M in six of seven events. Overall, he has finished as the top Wolverine in 29 of his 43 career events.
• Michigan played in six events in the fall, securing four top-five finishes including winning the Virtues Intercollegiate (559, -17) and posting a runner-up finish at the Canadian Collegiate (852, -12). As a team, Michigan averaged 288.18 per round with six rounds under par including a season-low 276 (-12) tallied in the second round of the Virtues Intercollegiate.
• U-M has a pair of Big Ten Golfers of the Week. First, Thomson's victory at the Canadian Collegiate Invitational (202, -14) helped him to his second career medalist honor and gave him an exemption to play in the 2025 RBC Canadian Open (June 3-5) at the TPC of Toronto. Liu earned U-M's second accolade after he tied for medalist honors (137, -7) for a second straight year at the rain-shortened Virtues Intercollegiate.
