ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team will play a mid-week match at No. 3 Ohio State on Wednesday (Feb. 26) before hosting Western Michigan on Friday (Feb. 28) in the final action before Big Ten play begins in March.
Notes
• Michigan is ranked No. 12 in the first computerized rankings of the season, released last Thursday. The Wolverines are 5-5 on the season after losing at Illinois in a non-conference match on Saturday.
• The Wolverines' early strength of schedule has been impressive. Out of the 10 opponents Michigan has faced this year, seven have been in the top 25, including two in the top 10. They'll add another to their resume on Wednesday when they take on the highest-ranked opponent they've faced this season, No. 3 Ohio State.
• OSU holds a 76-49-2 edge in the all-time series and has won the last seven matches. Michigan's last win was a 4-2 match to win the Big Ten Tournament Championships in 2022. Conversely, the Wolverines boast a 59-8 all-time record against Western Michigan. The Broncos grabbed a win in 2002-03 but after that, it's been all Maize & Blue with 15 straight wins.
• The Buckeyes are 9-2 on the season and have three ranked singles players including No. 14 Aidan Kim, No. 52 Alexander Bernard and No. 64 Jack Anthrop. The squad also has two ranked doubles pairs in No. 23 Bryce Nakashima/William Jenson and No. 74 Kim and Bernard. Western is 10-5, but 0-5 when playing on the road.
• Benjamin Kittay is 6-3 in dual singles playing primarily at the No. 1 position. He is ranked No. 55 in the ITA singles rankings and had a career-best five-match win streak to start the season. In doubles, he and partner Patorn Hanchaikul are ranked No. 70 with a 4-2 record.
• Will Cooksey has the most singles wins on the team this year with 13, he is followed by Gavin Young who has had limited playing time this spring. Cooksey is 5-3 in dual matches including a 2-0 mark at No. 4 singles. Young is ranked No. 71 in singles play with four final results this spring season.
• Hanchaikul's win against Illinois' Tyler Bowers on Saturday marked his 40th career singles win, and his second win over a ranked opponent this year. All-time he is 21-9 in dual singles play.
• Bjorn Swenson is on a two-match singles win streak with matching 6-4 sets in each of his last outings at No. 3 singles. His longest career win streak is eight wins from the fall of 2022.
