
Early Offense, Late Insurance Lead U-M to Series-Tying Win Over Long Beach State

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The University of Michigan baseball team recorded 15 hits, including three each from Cole Caruso and Jeter Ybarra, en route to a 10-6 win over Long Beach State on Saturday (March 1) at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field. The win evened the series at one game each.
Michigan (5-4) had a strong night at the plate with all nine starting batters reaching base safely and four tallying multiple hits. Ybarra drove in three runs, while Caruso collected two RBI. Mitch Voit scored three times while Benny Casillas scored twice. Dylan Vigue started and went four innings, surrendering four runs on four hits while striking out four. Cade Connolly (1-1) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of work, and Will Rogers earned his second save of the season after 3.1 innings of relief.
Long Beach State (5-5) opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first. U-M countered, taking the lead in the top of the second. Ybarra hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a passed ball and moved to third on Caruso's single in the next at-bat. Three batters later, Robert Hamchuk and AJ Rausch brought Ybarra and Caruso home with singles of their own.
The Maize and Blue bats came alive in the third inning with the Wolverines scoring four runs on six hits. Benny Casillas and Mitch Voit opened the frame with singles. Caruso brought home Casillas with a single before Colby Turner tallied his first hit as a Wolverine, an RBI double that scored Voit. Noah Miller kept the runs coming with a two-run double to give U-M a 6-1 advantage.
Vigue struck out two in setting the Dirtbags down in order in the bottom of the third. U-M added one more run in the fourth on an Ybarra RBI double to increase the Michigan lead to 7-1.
The Dirtbags chipped away at the Wolverines' lead, scoring twice in the fourth and once more in the fifth to cut their deficit to 7-4. Grant Bradley took the mound for U-M in the fifth to get the first two outs of the frame before Connolly was summoned from the bullpen. He got the final out of the fifth and combined with Will Rogers to toss a scoreless sixth.
The Wolverines added some insurance runs in the top of the eighth. A Rausch bloop single to right was followed by a Casillas single and a Voit walk to load the bases with one out. Ybarra singled through the left side to score Rausch and Casillas. Caruso brought home Voit with a double to put U-M head 10-4.
LBSU got two runs back in the bottom of the frame on a two-run double and Michigan went down in order in the top of the ninth. Rogers pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up the three-inning save.
Michigan will wrap up the series against Long Beach State at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field on Sunday (March 2) at 1 p.m. PST.
