LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The University of Michigan baseball team secured a series win against Long Beach State with a 7-6 victory at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field on Sunday afternoon (March 2).
Michigan (6-4) got a strong start from David Lally Jr., who went 5.1 innings, allowing the Dirtbags (5-6) just one run on one hit with five total base runners while striking out five. At the plate, Mitch Voit led the way with three hits and four RBIs. Will Rogers also tallied three hits and scored a run, while Matt Spear contributed two solo home runs. Jonathan Kim scored twice, including Michigan's first run in the sixth inning.
Benny Casillas recorded the first hit of the game with a one-out double but was left stranded. Over the next four innings, U-M managed just one additional hit, a single from Rogers, while also drawing two walks.
On the mound, Lally Jr. silenced the Long Beach State (5-6) bats, not allowing a hit through five innings and facing the minimum 12 batters through four. The Dirtbags drew walks in the second and fourth innings, but double plays erased both threats. Lally hit the first batter of the fifth but retired the next three, including his fifth strikeout of the game.
Michigan broke through in the sixth when Kim led off with a walk and moved to second on a Casillas sacrifice bunt. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Kim scored on a single through the left side from Voit, giving U-M a 1-0 lead. Long Beach State responded immediately, plating a run after a hit-by-pitch and their first hit of the game. Lally exited after that, with Tate Carey taking over on the mound. Carey struck out the first batter he faced and induced a flyout to end the inning, stranding two runners.
The Wolverines' bats came alive in the seventh. Spear led off with an opposite-field solo home run. Rogers followed with a double and later scored on a two-out single from Kim. Casillas then drew a walk, putting two on for Voit, who delivered his second RBI single of the day, driving in Kim. A popout ended the inning, stranding two runners.
Carey worked a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to keep Long Beach State off the board. In the eighth, Spear launched his second solo home run of the game to extend Michigan's lead. Carey returned for the bottom of the eighth, allowing one run on three singles before forcing two flyouts to escape further damage.
Voit added crucial insurance runs in the ninth with a two-run home run, extending Michigan's lead to 7-3. The Dirtbags opened the bottom of the ninth with a solo home run and added two more runs to close the gap to 7-6. With the bases loaded, Max Debiec entered in relief and recorded a popout and a flyout to secure the win.
Michigan will remain in California for its first midweek contest of the season, taking on UCLA in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday (March 4). First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT, with streaming available on B1G+.
