ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team dropped a back-and-forth midweek contest to Eastern Michigan, 9-8, on Tuesday afternoon (March 25) at Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (13-11) was led by Benny Casillas, who reached base five times, collecting two doubles and drawing three walks. He scored twice. Mitch Voit and Cole Caruso also posted multi-hit performances, as seven different Wolverines recorded hits. Five pitchers took the mound for U-M, with three logging 2.2 innings apiece.
Eastern Michigan (11-10) jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning on two walks and a triple. The Wolverines responded in the bottom half with a leadoff double from Casillas. Voit singled him home, and a single from Jeter Ybarra set up runners on the corners. Caruso tied the game with a double, but a strikeout and groundout ended the rally.
EMU reclaimed the lead with a solo home run to open the second inning. Michigan stranded two in the bottom of the second before the Eagles extended their lead with two runs on three hits in the fourth.
Josh Kasner quieted the EMU offense with 2.2 innings of dominant relief, allowing just one baserunner and keeping the deficit at two.
Michigan surged ahead in the sixth. Caruso led off with a double, and two hit-by-pitches loaded the bases. Brayden Jefferis singled in two runs, and Robert Hamchuk scored on a wild pitch to tie the game. Colby Turner followed with a go-ahead double, but the Wolverines left two runners on.
Eastern tied it again in the seventh with an RBI single. U-M went down quietly in the bottom half, but Will Rogers (0-2) tossed a clean eighth with two strikeouts.
Casillas opened the bottom of the eighth with his second double of the day, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Turner's sacrifice fly. Michigan loaded the bases with three walks but couldn't add on.
Eastern Michigan rallied once more in the ninth, scoring two runs on one hit and a passed ball to take the lead for good. Jefferis worked a one-out walk in the bottom of the ninth, but a reviewed double play ended the game.
Michigan returns to action on Friday (March 28), opening a three-game home series against Penn State. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. with streaming available on B1G+.
