ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A pair of big innings helped the University of Michigan baseball team to an 8-7 series-tying win over Penn State on Saturday afternoon (March 29) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan starter Dylan Vigue got out of an early jam with a flyout and strikeout after giving up a pair of one-out singles in the first. The Wolverines scored a run in the bottom of the first when a leadoff double from Benny Casillas was followed by a Brayden Jefferis single.
Penn State (17-9, 6-5 Big Ten) took the lead in the second inning, scoring two runs on a hit and an error. U-M (14-12, 6-5 Big Ten) reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third. Jefferis reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an RBI double from Mitch Voit. Ybarra homered two batters later -- his first of the season and his Michigan career -- to give U-M a 4-2 lead.
Vigue struck out two Nittany Lions in the fourth before Michigan padded its lead. Matt Spear drew a leadoff walk and scored after singles from Will Rogers and Jonathan Kim. Jefferies delivered again, bringing home Rogers, and a Voit single scored Kim. Jefferies later scored after a wild pitch and a groundout, and the Wolverines held an 8-2 advantage.
The Nittany Lions countered in the top of the fifth with a four-run frame of their own. Vigue allowed a pair of walks to start the inning and was relieved by Tate Carey. After a PSU run, Rogers moved to the mound and after allowing a three-run double, retired the next three batters to keep Michigan in front 8-6.
Rogers shut down the Penn State offense the rest of the way, allowing just two baserunners -- although one scored on a sacrifice fly in the seventh -- and inning-ending strikeouts in the final three frames helped Michigan earn the victory.
Jefferis led Michigan with four hits, two RBI and two runs, and Voit collected three hits, two RBI and a run. Rogers recorded a pair of hits and earned his first win of the season, pitching the final five innings allowing two hits, and a run while striking out five.
Michigan heads into Sunday's (March 30) finale looking to earn a series win against Penn State. First pitch from Ray Fisher Stadium is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
