ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team earned a come-from-behind 6-5 victory over Penn State on Sunday afternoon (March 30) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, to secure the weekend series.
Michigan (15-12, 7-5 Big Ten) was led on the mound by Kurt Barr (3-2), who pitched seven innings and scattered seven hits and two walks. He allowed just one earned run and struck out seven. Max Debiec closed out the game with two scoreless innings to earn his second save of the season.
Colby Turner, Benny Casillas, and Matt Spear each posted multi-hit games, with Turner adding a run and two RBIs. Cole Caruso and Greg Pace Jr. each homered in the contest.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Caruso drew a walk and advanced to third on a single from Spear. Pinch-hitter Jonathan Kim then doubled to score Caruso and put Michigan in front. The Wolverines loaded the bases with another walk, but a groundout ended the threat.
After 10 combined runs were scored in the first three innings, the game turned into a pitcher's duel. Barr settled in to strike out four more over his final four frames, allowing just four baserunners and working out of a jam in the seventh. Max Debiec entered in the eighth and retired six of the seven batters he faced to secure the win and earn the save.
Michigan (15-12, 7-5 Big Ten) erased a 5-0 deficit in the third inning with a five-run rally. Pace Jr. started the frame with a solo homer, Casillas singled, and Brayden Jefferis walked to set the table. Turner followed with a two-RBI double to right field, and after a groundout, Caruso launched his seventh home run of the season to tie the game.
Penn State (17-10, 6-6 Big Ten) had capitalized on Michigan errors early, scoring two unearned runs in the first and three more in the third. The Wolverines managed baserunners in each of the next few innings -- including doubles from Tyler Inge and Turner -- but were unable to break the tie until the seventh.
The Wolverines will hit the road for a midweek matchup against Eastern Michigan on Tuesday (April 1), with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. The game will stream live on ESPN+.
