
Wolverines Top Eastern Michigan in Run-Rule Victory

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team defeated Eastern Michigan, 13-2, in a run-rule victory on Tuesday afternoon (April 1) at Oestrike Stadium.
Michigan (16-12) exploded offensively behind strong days from Benny Casillas, Cole Caruso and Mitch Voit. Casillas tallied three hits in four at-bats and drew a walk, scoring once and driving in four runs. Caruso and Voit homered as part of multi-hit days and scored three times. Eight Wolverines scored runs, with seven recording RBIs.
On the mound, Cade Connolly drew the start and struck out three over three innings of one-run work. Tate Carey picked up the win in relief, tossing two innings.
Caruso doubled to open the second inning, and a walk from Noah Miller put two on with no outs. With two outs, Casillas delivered a two-RBI double to right-center to put Michigan on the board.
In the third, after Jeter Ybarra reached on an error, Caruso stepped in and blasted his eighth home run of the season to double the Wolverines' lead to 4-0.
Eastern Michigan (13-12) put runners on in the first and second but couldn't convert, as Connolly escaped both frames. The Eagles opened the third with a solo homer but were quickly retired in order. Both teams went down in order in the fourth.
A five-run fifth inning broke the game open. Voit led off with a double, and after two outs, scored on a passed ball. Two walks put runners on before Jonathan Kim singled to score Caruso. Tyler Inge followed with an RBI single to score Miller, and Casillas drove in two more with a single to right. EMU added a solo home run in the bottom half, but Carey retired the side.
U-M tacked on another run in the sixth after Voit walked and stole second — his 10th steal of the season — then scored as Ybarra reached on an error. Brandon Newland worked around two walks in the bottom half, ending the frame with a strikeout looking.
Michigan added three more in the seventh. Greg Pace Jr. reached on an error and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Brayden Jefferis. Voit followed with a two-run homer, bringing home Casillas as well.
Newland struck out the first batter in the seventh but allowed the next two to reach. Preston Barr came in and struck out the final two to clinch the run-rule victory.
Michigan will head west for a three-game series at Oregon beginning Friday (April 4) at 5 p.m. PT. All games will stream live on B1G+.
