ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In the series finale, the University of Michigan baseball team lost to Iowa, 7-4, on Sunday afternoon (April 20) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan (23-17, 8-10 Big Ten) got a strong start from Tate Carey, who struck out eight over 4.2 innings while allowing two runs on two hits. Benny Casillas and Jeter Ybarra each went 2-for-4 with a home run to pace the offense.
Iowa (27-11, 17-4 Big Ten) opened the game with a two-base error but could not capitalize, as a flyout, fielder's choice, and strikeout ended the inning. Casillas gave Michigan the early lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the first — his first of the season.
Carey worked around trouble in the second, stranding two after back-to-back strikeouts, and both teams were retired in order in the third. In the fourth, Carey struck out the side after issuing a leadoff walk. Michigan had its own chance in the bottom half following a leadoff single from Mitch Voit, but a strikeout and a caught stealing quickly erased it. A walk and single gave U-M another shot later in the frame, but a strikeout ended the inning.
Iowa took the lead in the fifth with two runs on two hits. Will Rogers relieved Carey and stranded a pair to end the inning. The Hawkeyes added another run in the seventh on a double and single after leaving the bases loaded in the sixth.
The Wolverines responded in the seventh. With two outs, Tyler Inge walked and advanced on a single by Noah Miller. Inge scored on an error by the right fielder to make it 3-2. Casillas doubled to start the eighth, and Voit reached on a fielder's choice that brought him home to tie the game at 3-3. However, a double play ended the rally.
Iowa retook the lead with four runs on three hits in the top of the ninth. Ybarra cut into the deficit with a solo shot in the bottom of the inning, but Michigan couldn't mount a full comeback as a strikeout and groundout ended the game.
Michigan will return to the field on Tuesday (April 22) against Bowling Green. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., with the game streaming live on B1G+.
