
Michigan to Face Youngstown State, Host NCAA First and Second Round

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team (23-4) earned the No. 3 seed for the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season and will host the first and second rounds this weekend at the Varsity Tennis Center. Michigan will square off against Horizon League champion Youngstown State (14-7) in the first round on Friday (May 2) at 1 p.m.
Notes
• Admission is free to all matches at the VTC. Matches shall be played outdoors unless the projected weather forecast, for a minimum of two hours out of a four-hour time period from the start of the match, according to www.weather.com, is a high of less than 50 degrees or sustained winds (not including wind gusts) of more than 20 mph.
• The No. 3-ranked Wolverines earned the highest seed in program history for the second consecutive season. It marks their fourth top-five seed overall. Michigan won the 2025 Big Ten championship, its third consecutive title.
• U-M is hosting the first and second rounds for the 11th time since 2010 and for the third straight season. The Wolverines have advanced to the third round in each of their previous 10 hosting opportunities.
• Michigan is making its 26th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and has reached the quarterfinals three times, including in each of the last two seasons.
• Joining Michigan at the Varsity Tennis Center this weekend are Ole Miss (15-12), Arizona State (14-9), and Youngstown State (14-7). Michigan will face Youngstown State on Friday (May 2) at 1 p.m., with Ole Miss and Arizona State squaring off at 10 a.m. The winners will meet on Saturday (May 3) at 1 p.m.
• This is Youngstown State's third trip to the Varsity Tennis Center for NCAA first and second round action. The Penguins also competed in Ann Arbor in 2017 and 2023. YSU won the Horizon League tournament last weekend, which was also held at the VTC.
• The Wolverines have won 12 straight doubles points, last dropping the opening point of the match at No. 24 UCLA on March 22. U-M has maintained a consistent doubles lineup during that stretch: Jessica Bernales and Lily Jones at No. 1, Reese Miller and Julia Fliegner at No. 2, and Piper Charney and Emily Sartz-Lunde at No. 3.
• Charney has 33 singles wins this season, tied for the 11th-most in a single season in program history. She has now recorded back-to-back 30-win seasons to start her career.
• Fliegner was named Michigan's female recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor, becoming just the third women's tennis player in program history to earn the prestigious award.
• U-M features four ranked singles players: Fliegner (No. 5), Charney (No. 25), Jones (No. 41), and Bernales (No. 82). In doubles, Jones and Bernales are ranked No. 20, while Bernales and Charney are ranked No. 34.
• Head coach Ronni Bernstein is in her 18th season at Michigan with a 547-196 overall record. She ranks eighth nationally among active coaches in wins and 18th all-time.
• The winner of the Ann Arbor regional will face the winner of the Texas regional, which includes Texas, Baylor, Boise State, and Grand Canyon. The Super Regional is set for May 10.
