
U-M Sets Three Records as 4x400m Relay, Sutherland Qualify for NCAAs at East First Round

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team closed out competition at the NCAA East First Round hosted by North Florida on Saturday (May 31), setting three records while Savannah Sutherland and the Wolverines' 4x400-meter relay team qualified for the NCAA Championships.
Sutherland qualified in the 400-meter hurdles, running 54.39 seconds to finish first overall in the quarterfinals. The senior set the Hodges Stadium facility record and bested the NCAA East First Round record of 54.61 that she set at last year's meet. Sidney Green finished 15th with a time of 57.32, just 0.16 seconds behind the last time qualifier.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Payton Smith, Sutherland, Green and Noelani Phillips bested the program record they set just six weeks ago, running 3:29.22 to finish 10th. The squad punched its ticket to the NCAA Championships after qualifying by time.
Mary Caroline Heinen finished 32nd in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 16:10.49.
Abigail Russell finished 18th in the discus throw with a mark of 51.16 meters (167 feet, 10 inches). In the high jump, Gabriella Newman did not clear a height.
Five Wolverines and one relay team qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Wednesday through Saturday, June 11-14, at Oregon's Hayward Field. In addition to today's qualifiers, Clare McNamara (heptathlon), Russell (shot put), Elizabeth Tapper (shot put) and Emma Yungeberg (javelin throw) will head to the West Coast.
