
Sutherland Advances to the 400m Hurdles Final at NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team opened the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field on Thursday (June 12), with Savannah Sutherland advancing to the 400-meter hurdles final.
Sutherland will get the chance to earn her second career national title, finishing first in the semifinals with a time of 54.13 seconds. The senior was 0.94 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Akala Garrett of Texas and the only runner to break 55 seconds. Sutherland was the NCAA runner-up at the 2024 NCAA Championships after claiming the title at the 2023 NCAA Championships.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Payton Smith, Sutherland, Sidney Green and Noelani Phillips ran 3:33.75 to finish 19th.
In the shot put, Elizabeth Tapper finished 14th with a mark of 16.97 meters (55 feet, 8.25 inches). She improved on every throw, starting with a foul and 15.78m (51-9.25) on her first two attempts. The sophomore sat in last place heading into her final attempt before jumping 10 spots to 14th. Abaigail Russell placed 21st, throwing for 16.38m (53-9) to come just 0.57m shy of her personal best.
Emma Yungeberg finished 17th in the javelin throw with a mark of 50.88m (166-11). The junior improved with each attempt, throwing 50.88m (165-4) and 50.75m (166-6) on her first and second attempts.
Tapper earned second team All-America honors, while Russell, Yungeberg, and the relay squad earned All-America honorable mention citations for their efforts.
Clare McNamara will open the first of two days of competition in the heptathlon on Friday (June 13). The graduate student will start the day at 11:45 a.m. PT with the 100-meter hurdles.
