LA JOLLA, Calif. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan water polo team closed play at the Triton Invitational with an 11-5 victory over No. 14-ranked UC Davis on Sunday (Feb. 1) at Canyonview Pool. Senior Maddy Scarth and sophomore Ari Karampetsou combined for seven goals, while Sophia Bunnell recorded 13 saves to lead the Wolverines.
Lulu Hirschfield opened the scoring for Michigan, followed shortly after by Karampetsou to give the Wolverines an early advantage. Tied 2-2 entering the second quarter, Karampetsou scored twice more to complete her hat trick just over 10 minutes into the contest. Issy Jackson responded after an Aggies goal with her lone score of the day before Scarth found the net on back-to-back possessions to extend the lead.
Scarth continued her offensive surge to open the second half, scoring to give Michigan a four-goal cushion. The Wolverines pulled away over the final two quarters, limiting UC Davis to just one second-half goal while adding three more scores, including one from Karampetsou and a pair off the arm of Kaia Levenfeld.
Michigan will return to action following a bye week, hosting the Midwest Invitational. The Wolverines will open play with a rematch against UC Davis on Saturday (Feb. 14) at 1:15 p.m.
