ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sixty-five minutes were not enough to determine a victor on Friday night (Feb. 13) inside Yost Ice Arena, as the second-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team settled for a 4-4 tie before Michael Hage scored in the shootout to earn the Wolverines an extra point in the conference standings against sixth-ranked Penn State.
Goaltender Jack Ivankovic turned aside all three shootout attempts from PSU to give the Wolverines a chance. Hage came through for the Wolverines on the team's first try, when he pulled off a backhand-to-forehand move that sent the goalie to the ice before depositing the puck into a yawning cage.
The contest, Michigan's sixth to require extra time this season, was the first that the Wolverines did not end up winning. With the tie, the team's overtime record drops to 5-0-1.
Penn State (18-8-1, 11-4-1 Big Ten) opened the scoring 59 seconds into the contest when a loose puck made its way through the slot to be banged across the goal line.
Michigan's first golden opportunity came six minutes into the contest when Luca Fantilli showed off his handles by walking around his defender before finding Adam Valentini with space to shoot in the slot, but the freshman's attempt was engulfed by the goaltender's chest protector, resulting in a faceoff.
The Wolverines (23-5-1, 14-4-1 Big Ten) eventually tied it up at 9:18 with a rebound goal off the stick of Garrett Schifsky. Freshman defenseman Drew Schock created the opportunity by waiting for a shooting lane to open up before he released his shot from the top of the left circle. After the puck skittered off the goalie, the junior forward was positioned atop the crease to finish off the rebound. Hage earned his 26th helper of the season with the secondary assist. Schifsky became the sixth Wolverine to reach double digits in the goal column this year.
The visitors responded at 11:35 to reclaim a one-goal lead after netting a goal from below the right dot that deflected off Ivankovic's gear and into the net to make it 2-1.
Michigan's power-play unit took the ice at 13:09 after the Nittany Lions were whistled for holding. PSU took a second penalty in the midst of the first chance to create a 5-on-3 advantage, and the captain made it count.
T.J. Hughes equalized at 14:25 by slamming home a one-timer from below the left dot to finish off a scrambling sequence for the outmanned penalty killers. Hughes' tally was set up by Hage and Jayden Perron to tie the game at 2-2.
The game took a turn with 2:54 remaining when a PSU player was ejected with a major penalty and game misconduct for jabbing Hughes with the butt end of his stick as the players entered their respective benches. An official saw the interaction and reviewed the play before confirming the infraction.
After an eventful first period, the score was tied at 2-2, with Michigan holding matching 11-10 advantages in both shots on goal and faceoff wins.
Penalties marred the early portion of the second period as the teams traded whistles and jockeyed for positioning. PSU pulled ahead for the third time at 8:20 by capitalizing on a failed Wolverines zone exit.
Several minutes later, freshman blueliner Asher Barnett notched a game-tying goal at 11:17 after Hage put in the legwork to collect Barnett's hard rim around the boards. The sophomore forward carved deep into the offensive zone before slipping a feed back to Barnett on the weak side, and the youngster forced a shot through the five-hole to make it a 3-3 game. With half a game to go, Hage had already secured a three-assist playmaker.
PSU returned to the power play at 12:23 after U-M was called for cross-checking, but the home team's penalty kill remained perfect by dismissing the chance.
The game was tied 3-3 as the teams headed to their locker rooms for the second intermission. U-M held a slim 22-20 edge in shots on goal, as well as a 20-15 lead in the faceoff dot.
Michigan embarked on a power-play attempt at 6:18 after Tyler Duke drew a hooking penalty by driving hard toward the blue paint in search of a shot. Despite a number of dangerous chances, U-M failed to net a go-ahead goal before play returned to even strength.
Hughes scored his second of the night and gave Michigan its first lead of the contest at 10:21 when he batted a puck out of midair to cap off an abbreviated breakaway for Malcolm Spence that had initially been turned aside. Once the freshman's initial attempt was punched back into the slot, Hughes swung his stick in stride to bang it home and make it 4-3.
A post-whistle fracas with 4:49 left in regulation was initiated when Ivankovic tumbled to the ice following contact. Each side sent a skater to the box, but U-M picked up a second minor penalty while defending the goaltender, giving PSU a power play.
Penn State capitalized with the extra skater to tie the game at 4-4 with 3:14 remaining.
Both teams threatened to score in the extra session, but neither side could find the back of the net before the game officially went into the books as a tie.
Ivankovic ended the evening with 34 saves on 38 shots, as Michigan held a 35-30 advantage in shots on goal.
On Saturday (Feb. 14), the conference foes will reunite at Yost to close out the regular-season series. Puck drop is scheduled for 5 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
