
U-M Comes Up Short at No. 13 Iowa in Big Ten Action

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team fell behind in the second quarter and closed within five at the end of the third quarter, but got no closer in a 62-44 loss to No. 13-ranked Iowa on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 22) at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Olivia Olson recorded her 33rd straight game in double figures, turning in 13 points and six rebounds. Mila Holloway joined her in double-figure scoring, going for 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Michigan forced Iowa into 18 turnovers, but turned the ball over 24 times, resulting in 21 points for the home team. U-M held a 36-34 advantage on the glass.
Michigan jumped out to a 6-2 lead behind a three-pointer from Olson and a three-point play from Ashley Sofilkanich in the opening minutes. The teams combined for 18 turnovers in the first 10 minutes of the game, ending the first quarter tied at 12-12.
Iowa used a 7-0 run in the middle stages of the second quarter to take a 26-18 lead, forcing a Michigan timeout with 2:44 left before halftime.
After Iowa split a pair of free throws in the closing minutes of the half, Olson made good on a putback to pull Michigan within 27-20 heading into the locker room.
Michigan got back-to-back triples from Te'Yala Delfosse and Holloway to pull Michigan within five, 35-30, and force an Iowa timeout with 3:58 left in the third.
Syla Swords hit a three-pointer on Michigan's final possession of the third, again pulling Michigan within five, but Iowa banked in a three-pointer as time expired to keep a 42-35 lead going into the final quarter.
Michigan came up empty on its first several possessions of the fourth quarter, but kept Iowa off the board for more than two minutes to keep the deficit to just seven points. After an Iowa layup to push the lead to nine, 44-35, with 7:57 remaining, Delfosse converted her second three of the half to trim the lead to six with 7:01 to go.
A pair of Holloway free throws with 6:30 remaining kept Michigan in a two-possession game before Iowa ripped off six straight points for a 52-40 lead with 4:15 to go. U-M closed the gap to 10, 52-42, on an Olson layup with just under four minutes to go, but got no closer the rest of the way.
U-M will complete a two-game road swing on Wednesday (Feb. 25), heading to Ohio State to face the Buckeyes at 8 p.m.
